Finding the Way – Dave Dravecky

January 4, 2017

“Jesus answered, ‘I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.’” —John 14:6

In order to find the Truth and the Life, we first have to understand the Way. Only when we are able to find the Way will we be able to absorb the Truth into our lives. But how can we discover the Way? By reading and studying God’s Word.

Knowledge of Scripture is conveyed through each person’s way of life. When God’s Word is part of your DNA, you will automatically portray the truth of the Gospel to others by the way you speak and act. God intentionally made His Word to speak to us continually, unbound by time or generation.

“For the Word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart.” —Hebrews 4:12

And as we get to know God’s Word, we get to know Jesus. In fact, Jesus is referred to as the Word:

“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God…The Word became flesh and made His dwelling among us. We have seen His glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.” —John 1:1,14

Finding Jesus through God’s Word is the pathway for us to find freedom and joy in life—this is where we find true fulfillment and satisfaction. We can spend the rest of our lives looking back at the things we’ve done wrong, dwelling on our regrets and past failures, but then we wouldn’t be looking towards the Truth. God calls us to get our eyes off of ourselves and instead seek the peace and presence of Christ.

Shame and guilt do not own us; Christ does. We can look back and remember the ways in which God has redeemed and transformed us, while looking towards the Truth that we have in front of us. By celebrating who Jesus is and what He has done for me, I’m able to see myself as He sees me. The Most High God sees me as one of His children and that is what gives me significance.

“Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus, because through Christ Jesus the law of the Spirit who gives life has set you free from the law of sin and death.” —Romans 8:1-2

If Christ doesn’t condemn us, neither should we condemn ourselves or each other. Instead we should love each other as Christ loves us. This is the sufficiency of God’s grace—this is the good news of being a child of God.

There are so many distractions and temptations for me to go back to who I used to be—a broken and self-focused man. I am in no way perfect today, but by daily reminding myself who I am in Christ and choosing to see myself through God’s eyes, I find peace. The God of the universe cares so much for me that He gave His Son so that I may live the Jesus Way. Understanding that truth gives me the freedom and grace to move closer to Him.
